How to combine multiple files into one PDF file using Acrobat X

Donna Baker – March 23, 2012

You can either start from the task button or the Welcome Window. Click the Create task button, and choose Combine Files into PDF. From the Welcome Window, just click Combine Files into PDF.

The Combine Files dialog box opens. Notice that the Single PDF button is selected automatically. Click Add Files > Add Files. Locate and select the file you want to include. The first file shows on the list.
Click Add Files again to open the menu. This time, we’ll add several files at once, so click Add Folders. The Browse For Folder dialog box opens. Select the folder’s location, select your folder, and click OK. All the files in the folder—three in this case—are added to the list.

You don't need to use all the pages in a file. Click a file’s name to activate it and then click the Choose Pages button. You see the Preview and Select Page Range dialog box. Use the arrows at the bottom of the preview area to preview the document’s pages. Click Pages to activate the field and then type the page numbers you want to convert. Click OK to close the dialog box. You see the selected Page Range shows on the list.

If you want to change the order of the files, click a file’s name and then click the Move Up (or Move Down) button. When your list is ready click Combine Files. Wait a few seconds for Acrobat to process each file that isn’t in PDF format. Wait another few seconds for Acrobat to publish the new PDF document.

The Save As dialog box opens. Notice that Acrobat names the new file Binder1.pdf by default. Click Save to save the file and open it in Acrobat X.

Check out your new file: Click the Page Thumbnails tab, scroll through the thumbnails, and click a thumbnail to view the page. Four files into one PDF file in just a few seconds!

Hi,

I need your kind help.
I have just combined a lot of files in one single file (10.000 pages) but there are problems linked to some pages fonts (broked fonts).
I saved the file and some pages are not yet readable.
How can I fix this problem?

Thank you very much.

Damiano

Hi Sandra,

Are you using the Combine Files dialog? If so, you can use either the list view or thumbnail view to select exactly which files you’d like to combine.

Thanks,
Lori

Hi david Williamson,

The best way to get in contact with customer support is to use the chat feature here:

I was able to select specific word pages or excel sheets when combining multiple files in previous Adobe versions, but Adobe XI doesn’t seem to allow that option.  Is there a setting that needs to be changed?  It was an essential tool for my work saving me lots of time and headaches.

Hi Nicole,

In what version were you able to do this? Back in version 8 you could do this with PDF Collections but it’s only possible now with a Portfolio.

Thanks,
Lori

Hello,
With Adobe Acrobat IX Pro, we used to be able to modify the registry and attached folders to the Adobe file.  Is this still possible with Adobe Acrobat XI Pro? I know it is possible to attach a folder with Portfolio, but I would rather stay with the regular file structure.

Appreciate your help,
Nicole

Hi cherry anne singian,

You’ll need Acrobat and not just the free Reader to do this.

Thanks,
Lori

Hi Sochansolarz,

Have you tried running the Repair Acrobat Installation from under the Help menu? Also, have you updated Acrobat XI to the very latest point update?

Thanks,
Lori

Hi Mallery,

Let me know if you continue to experience problems with the video. It played fine for me. Keep in mind there is no audio (other than music) with this video.

Thanks,
