How to create mobile-ready PDF files with Acrobat XI Pro

Donna Baker – September 20, 2012

Is there a simple way to make my basic PDF documents work on mobile devices?

Follow these 5 steps to create mobile-ready PDF documents using Acrobat XI Pro.

  1. Open the Action Wizard panel in the Tools pane and click Optimize for Web and Mobile.
  2. Click Add Files and then locate and select the file(s) you want to process.
  3. Click Start.
    Colors are converted
    Fonts are embedded
    File saved using Mobile settings
  4. Acrobat XI Pro processes each action in order, and shows a checkmark when complete.
  5. Choose a name and storage location for the processed file.

Hi Oriana Andreucci,

This particular Action was added in Acrobat XI Pro so it’s not available in version X.

Thanks,
Lori

Hi Youngmeddo,

You’ll need to install the latest version of Adobe Mobile Reader to comment on your PDF with these type of devices.

Thanks,
Lori

Hi Carmen,

The problem may have more to do with the particular fill & sign app you’re using and not necessarily the form. What happens when you view the form using the Adobe Reader mobile app?

Thanks,
Lori

is there a way to do this with acrobat 8? I downloaded the form to my phone and used a pdf fill and sign app but the fields are not all displaying properly. Thanks

Hi Pina,

You would need to write a custom JavaScript to do this. Or, you could purchase an existing script such as this:

Thanks,

If I have 42 bookmarks and would like to auto number as in the table of contents the order is all correct in all the destinations.

Hi Danny Walls,

I would recommend using the EchoSign service to sign and exchange documents. Here is a tutorial with more information:

Hi Patricia,

This sort of sounds like a problem I’ve seen when folks fill out a form using Mac Preview and the form field information disappears. Make sure everyone is using the Adobe Mobile Reader when filling out the form.

Thanks,
Lori

Is it possible to create a fillable pdf file for mobile viewing? We have a fillable form on our website that when filled in and emailed does not display the filled in text on mobile devices or ipad, e.g. Thank you

Hi Terry Smith,

Most of the video tutorials on the site have transcripts. What type of mobile device were you attempting to view the tutorial on? It’s just a MP4 video hosted on Adobe TV.

I was glad this tutorial had a transcript and that others wrote out the steps for those who didn’t notice the transcript link. The irony is that the video wouldn’t play on my mobile device.

What a PITA to have to watch a Video for 5 easy stages…

Here’s the simple WRITTEN instructions:

1)Open the ‘Action Wizard; in the ‘Tools’ pane and click ‘Optimize for Web and Mobile’.
2) Click ‘Add Files’ and then locate and select the file(s) you want to process.
3) Click ‘Start’
4) Adobe XI Pro processes each action in order, and shows a checkmark when complete.
5) Choose a name and storage location for the processed file.

There… quicker to read (and almost to type) than watch video.
